New figures show renewable energy as the one bright spot in South Africa’s deeply troubled power sector. With around 1,600MW of wind and solar now supplying the grid, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research calculates that renewable power resulted in fuel savings and other economic benefits totalling $458m in 2014.
